WWII was over and North Olmsted was about to grow by leaps and bounds as Cleveland families flocked to the suburbs. The water tower was built in 1949 to provide storage capacity and uniform water pressure to a growing North Olmsted population. The checkered marking of obstacles at airports is a world-wide conventional procedure adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), based on long-standing civil and military aviation procedures. Any obstacle located near a runway or flight path at an airport should be marked with orange and white checkered pattern (Water Tower @ 2 miles from runway). The FAA has spelled out the regulations. It is painted in International Orange (#12197) and White (#17875) as per FAA Advisory Circular AC 70/7460-1K, Ch. 3, 33b Checkerboard Pattern for Water, Gas and Grain storage tanks. It has capacity of about 2 million gallons. It was painted again in 1992 and them summer of 2014. It is now operated by Cleveland Water System. How does it compare in size to other tanks . Avon’s current water tower on Rt. 83 Near Detroit has a 750,000 gallon capacity and the water tower in North Ridgeville on Center Ridge Road holds 2.2 million gallons.
