WWR Race Report #4 Walyunga to Bells Rapid - 6km We had 35 paddlers racing on a sunny winters day (20deg). No breeze to contend with and water level (0.48 on the Walyunga Gauge) was high enough to ensure we had a fast race. Paddlers set off in 1 minute intervals with the slower paddlers heading out first and the fastest last. As a race organizer, I must mention that I had heaps of support from a number of volunteers and it certainly made my day easier after a few dramas during the race setup. Robyn Khorshid and Sue did an amazing job with the timing. Patrick Irwin with registrations, Warren S was our race starter and again brought his humour to the race. Alan M, Steve C, Ryan G and Andrew P did an awesome job as our safety boats along the difficult sections of the course. The one spot that many paddlers were tested was at Terminator Rapid which required skillful maneuvering through rocks in a swift current. There was a few stacks but overall, most got through unscathed. The race was won by the young Ben Pope in 26:00 minutes closely followed by Dave Worthy 26:43 and Daryl Long 27:00.
