Wagner highlights. Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstad (1895-1962) sings Schmerzen, the fourth of the Wesendonck Lieder. Flagstad is considered one of the best Wagnerian dramatic sopranos of the twentieth century and this performance is testimony of this. Historical recording from 1956 with the director Hans Knappertsbusch and the Vienna Philharmonic, released on vinyl in 1969 by the British label Ace of Diamonds, when the singer and director had died. The album included the five lieder, plus excerpts from Lohengrin, Parsifal and Die Walküre. In the past 15 years the album has been reissued by Decca and as well by Beulah, a London label specialist in recovering great recordings of twentieth century and editing them digitally.
