Wagners Brunnhilde Amalie Materna Amalie Materna (1844-1918) was an Austrian dramatic soprano who was cast in the role of Brunnhilde for Wagners RING OF THE NIBELUNG. Brunnhilde in Norse mythology was the daughter of Odin, his most beloved daughter, a Valkyrie, who rode a flying horse named Grane. She defied her father and saved the life of the yet unborn hero Siegfried for whom she would later give up immortality out of love for him. In the early productions of the Ring, Frau Materna wore winged helmets, carried spears and rode on an actual horse, which belonged to King Ludwig the 2nd of Bavaria.
