Waimea Old Boys Snr A Report by A. Nomna Mouse Saturday, 13th July 2013 > Waimea Old Boys Snr A verses Kahurangi Snr A, WON 41-23 Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys secured a bonus point victory over a strong Kahurangi side to finish top of The Car Company Nelson Division One points table leading into next weekend’s semi-finals. The 41-23 win included a four try bonus point and meant the Waimea team finished one point clear of Wanderers. They will face the Kahurangi team again this weekend as they went through to the semis as the number four qualifier with Nelson in third spot. The game never really gained momentum in the first half with both teams trading penalties before fullback James Lowe made a telling break down the left hand touch line and put unmarked winger Joe Higgins over for the opening try of the match. Second five Billy Guyton added the wide conversion to go with his three first half penalty successes, as Waimea took a 16-9 lead into the break. Some basic handling errors from the Waimea side gave Kahurangi plenty of possession in good field position to start the second half, and after stringing together multiple phases together they were able to breach the defence and level the scores at 16 all. Waimea responded with a try of their own before Kahurangi again got themselves back into the match and with under 20 minutes to play Waimea led by just five points, 28-23. Lowe was instrumental in closing out the match, adding another try assist to his own two tries when he gave the last pass for substitute winger Conna Trathen. Lowes second try was the last play of the game as Waimea finally broke free from the Kahuarangi challenge. Others to impress were prop Sila Puafisi who had several strong ball carries, locks Scott McKenzie and Tevita Cavubati and blindside flanker Dale Russ. In the backs, Guyton and first five Marty Banks controlled the game well while centre Ben Jeffrey made some telling tackles in a strong defensive display. Guyton ended the game with 21 points, from five penalties and three conversions, landing eight of his eleven attempts at goal. WOB 41 (Tries: J Lowe 2, J Higgins, C Trathen. Con: B Guyton 3. Pen: B Guyton 5) Kahurangi 23. Waimea will head into the semi-final rematch confident but not giving too much thought to Saturdays result, the Kahurangi side will come with more energy and a “nothing to lose attitude” in what is sure to be another tough and hard fought encounter. Waimea will host the semi at Jubilee Park from 3pm on Saturday. By A. Nomna Mouse.
