Wake up! We started our day with disturbing a restaurant of people, followed by flopping on the sidewalk in a full-on meltdown with kicking feet and everything. Diva is tired. Heres the thing -- I dont really make her leave restaurants on the few occasions that is happening, unless she is completely overstimulated. I know the other restaurant patrons get pissed at me, but my thing is that she will not learn the appropriate skills unless she gets a chance to practice them. We usually wait for her to use her words, or redirect her. Most of the time it works just fine and we are done with that in a minute or less. Every once in a while, it takes longer. I dont get embarrassed or care what other people think, but I thought I would put that out there in case you see something similar. I thought it might help other families to brave the meltdowns and the screams to do the family things they want to do. Its a teaching moment for her and for us as a family, and I appreciate everyone who lets it be that way without the sighs or rolled eyes. She has EVERY RIGHT to be in her community, every right. And because we take her everywhere, and because she gets so much practice, and because we are learning what helps her regulate in these instances, she is going to grow up and be a full member of her community. Thats awesome.
