Walkermine, CA. Part 1 (Walker Mine) @ an elevation of 6,076ft sitting on the northern side of Grizzly Ridge was a major copper mine, flotation mill & company town up in Northern Californias Copper Belt from 1909-1942. At its peak it produced around 1,400 tons of concentrated copper per day, employed over 500 men & had a 9-mile aerial tramway to transfer the ore from the mine to the Western Pacific Railroad siding in the small town of Spring Garden to its south. Today the mines main tunnel has a concrete seal/plug behind a huge padlocked iron door with 13 levels of underground workings behind it, a large settling pond & a tailings pile big enough that it can easily be seen on satellite images. The mill site has extensive iron & cement foundations stained green by copper, several large mine cars, a few of old buildings and many smaller foundations hidden among the pine trees all around the former townsite that are slowly being recaptured by the surrounding Plumas National Forest.
