Walking diagonal yesterday across town I was finally able to put - TopicsExpress

Walking diagonal yesterday across town I was finally able to put my bent and badly manicured finger on what has been the main sorce of my growing disenchantment with the City Formally Known As New York. It has lost its survivor sense of humor. Historically in its good old bad old days, this was it what got it thru rough times. The punchline has been run outta town. Even the skyline is taking itself way to seriously. There is a series lack of joy in these monoliths whom loom like some frowning, vacant supermodel, whos face is perfect but generically bland as not to compete with the clothes. You may marvel over her height and body mass index but you wouldnt want to be stuck in an elevator with her. The amount of construction going on in this city is beyond comprehension-I love amazing architecture- I love awe inspiring heights but if it doesnt incorporate the community who is it for? There is a haunting quality to the shadows of late and that ghostly absence of the thousands of people, small businesses and character that has been bulldozed or priced out at such an alarming rate that not only can their demise not be mourned, but one can find themselves second guessing their own memories as to their very existence in the first place- not even a relic left. Not since Robert Moses 30 odd year carve up of Post Depression New York has urban planning been so reckless in its disregard for humans. I know cites must change and grow but if you destroy the bedrock on which its built then your building your shining edifice on shaky ass ground
