Walking into the cafeteria last week, I found myself surrounded by a gaggle of sweat-drenched, sunscreen-scented adolescents animatedly discussing step styles, drill formations, and trill keys. Its band camp season at UVA-WISE and I feel right at home as did my lunch companion who said, I was in band in high school, this is my tribe! I played clarinet in two concerts this month, I said. Her reply was quick and to the point: . . .and you. . . are a chief. I have earned and fully embrace my status in the geek/nerd verse.
