Walking the dog this afternoon I came across a team from the Environment Agency stripping all the vegetation from the riverbank downstream of Telford Bridge over a distance of several hundred metres. I politely enquired as to why they were destroying hundreds of thousands of flowers and huge swathes of habitat just at the time when wildlife is renewing and desperately needs the resources they were so diligently removing. Apparently there is to be an inspection of Flood Defences and vegetation has to be removed to reassure whoever the Inspector may be that everything is in order. Since when has soft green vegetation been a cause of flooding? Who makes these moronic decisions (I dont blame the workers)? Does Flood Defence mean we have to suffer a sterile environment? We need a new name for the Environment Agency, how about the Ministry of Ecological Vandalism?
