Walley Mills Zimmerman Funeral Home James S MarshallJames S Marshall (May 24, 1929 - April 29, 2014) U.S. VeteranJames S. Marshall, 84, of Elkhart passed away at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday April 29, 2014 at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born May 24, 1929 in Detroit, MI to James H. Holdren & Mamie Pearl Stiffler. On September 5, 1959 in Elkhart he married Norma B. Salamander. She preceded her in death on January 20, 2014 in Elkhart. Surviving are 2 children, Bradley (Karissa) Marshall, Tina M. (Jerry Myers) Smith both of Elkhart; six grandchildren, Kassandra (Kevin) Proffitt, Kevin (Stacy) Marshall, Nicole (Jared) Horras, Vincent (Kellie) Smith, Hope Ann Godwin and Phillip Godwin. Also surviving is a sister, Sandra K. Marshall of Niles, MI; a brother, Richard (Carolyn) Marshall, Sr. of Elkhart and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Chaude Marshall and a sister, Beverly Jean Dunnuck. Jim graduated in 1948 from Elkhart High School. He was a US Navy veteran and a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church. He and Norma delivered Meals-On-Wheels for many years, Jim loved politics and served for seven years on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army, served for seven years on the board of directors for the United Way, was a member of the labor board at Elkhart General Hospital, served as a redcoat for over 20 years at the hospital, ran for county councilman, was the co-chairman for the GTE blood bank program, raised money for the Jerry Lewis Telethon and enjoyed bowling and golfing. Jim retired in 1991 from GTE where he worked as a switchman for 37 years. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home and from noon till 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Augustana Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday May 3, 2014 at the church. Pastor Steve Reshan will preside. A graveside service will be held at 4:00 p.m. (Central Time) at the Augsburg cemetery in Chesterton, Indiana where the US Navy honor guard will render military honors.
