Walsenburg City Hall update for Thur., May 22 WALSENBURG — With Wednesday’s rain and hail storm came some problems for Walsenburg’s municipal building currently undergoing roof repairs from a similar storm last year. We have received this update on the status of city hall from Walsenburg Administrator David Johnston. “The offices of the City of Walsenburg will probably be closed to the public until at least noon May 22, 2014, although employees will be working to restore their respective work areas. Persons wishing to do business with City Hall should call ahead (719-738-1048). If the phones are answered, updated information will be disseminated. If the phones are not answered, the electricity probably has not been restored to the City Hall complex.” Johnston went on to report, “Water did get into the electrical breaker panels that control the electrical service to the building. This will necessitate the replacement of several breakers to ensure safe service. That will occur this morning if parts can be obtained. Many of the fluorescent lights in the building will need to be checked for damage because they served as a conduit for water leaking into the building. Sagging ceiling tiles and saturated insulation will need to be removed. Precautionary measures will be taken by the electrician to identify and correct any shorts that may have occurred as a result of the water damage. The full electricity will then be restored to the building.” With a computer system update also ongoing, there are additional concerns that Johnston addressed, “At this time, we believe that all the computer servers are operational, although we will not know for certain until they can be electrified. Preliminary estimates indicate that two or three computer monitors were destroyed by the water in addition to two or three computer printers. CTI personnel will be on hand after the electricity is restored to effect an orderly and hopefully uneventful rebooting of the computer network.” Johnston also said in a press released issued Wednesday night, “The crew of the City’s roofing company has been phenomenal in helping to clean the damage inside the offices as well as sealing the roof itself. If the storm had waited another hour, most of the damage to the office rooms proper would not have occurred. I am informed that the eastern side of the building roof is now complete and the western side will be sealed before nightfall. They, along with their insurance adjustors will be on-site today to help with repairs and restoration of service.”
