Wanaka Futsal League of Champions Round 5 The first game of the night was a preview of the Wanaka Futsal Cup Final to be played in a couple of weeks. Let’s hope the Ballstars can make a few improvements before then because otherwise it is going to be another ‘no contest’. Has a team gone unbeaten throughout a season before? In the league and the cup? Maybe it has, maybe it hasn’t, but it is looking more and more likely that it exactly what will happen this year. Independent Scotland continue to play some of the most exciting, free flowing, free scoring, futsal to grace the Wanaka Futsal Arena. 7-0 at half time and cruising. Punishingly difficult to play against and goals coming from all - including the keeper, in this demonstration of how the game should be played. The biggest cheer of the game, ironic or not, came from the crowd when the Ballstars managed to score one in reply to the 12 they let in. Take nothing away from the Scots - it is pretty much all good and very little bad! Ironically, this time last year, rather than getting a lesson in futsal, the afore mentioned Ballstars won the league. With The Academy (The Dribble Squads members team name last year) unable to play due to international duty, they dropped a game and consequently lost their top spot in the extremely tight league. They were not going to let that happen again, so it fell upon a few new signings and a few veterans to bolster the squad and ensure a win. And a win it was. The Mishits were looking more like the team that started the season - at least we recognised the faces, but it was 5-1 to the Squad at half time. Although the Mishits dug in and made the score line a respectable 7-4 in the end it was not a surprise result to the onlooking crowd. The victory for the squad reinstating them to their second spot in the league, overtaking the Ballstars - keep an eye on these fellas for a end of season collapse, they have finally started to play some stiffer opposition and may have registered their last points for the season! Next up the Wanaka Poker Club against the New Team. It was never going to be a walk in the park but the bookies were tipping the Poker Club vets for a narrow victory and although The New Team won their first game in the league last time out and have improved as the season progressed it still seemed like a good bet. Prior to the game, there were rumours that player coach Dan Kumon didn’t back his own team for a win. Even as the players came off at half time with the Newbies 2 nil up Big Rich ‘The Book’ was still confident of his prediction coming good. It wasn’t for the want of trying for the Poker Club. It was leaked after the game that some of the players were carrying viruses, but to onlookers the only virus they had was a Bad Luck Virus* . The shots, and there were a few, were off target or blocked on the line by hook or by crook (is that the polite word for arse!?). Take nothing away from the New Team they did their defensive and attacking job well and proved to all that nothing is a certainty - except, of course, ‘Referee Klien’ texting during a game! 3 nil to the New Team final score. New Team ascend one place in the league but WPC hold onto forth through goal difference alone. Last game of the night was Notinyermum’s Forest v Misfits. There was always going to be a ‘coming of age’ for the Foresters, who, on paper, looked the part, but have been pretty much bottom of the table all season. Unfortunately the other team at the bottom was the Misfits and they caught the brunt of it the resurgence. 8-0 at half time tells a story. The meat on the bones of that was some great individual goals from Alex Sherwood, and some well constructed team football moments that the Misfits had no come back to. 11 nil the final score. So not so much movement in the table this week but there is a bit of congestion and a few teams can content for forth spot so still plenty for play for most teams. Next weeks ‘Game to Watch’ will be the newly invigorated New Team versus the now resplendent Notinyermum’s Forest. See you there. * See the classic comedy ‘Red Dwarf Season 5, Episode 4, for science of ‘luck’ being a virus.
