Wanaka Soccer Sevens In less than a month’s time Wanaka will - TopicsExpress

Wanaka Soccer Sevens In less than a month’s time Wanaka will be host to a brand new event. This is the first year of the all new Wanaka Soccer Sevens Tournament. Waitangi Weekend (February 7th and 8th) this year will be marked by some fine upstanding members of your community running around Pembroke Park in the February heat chasing a ball with the enthusiasm of children. No reason that next year the event might expand and hopefully compliment with the Alexandra Football Sevens in October that sees hundreds of young men, women and some not so young men all competing. Many of the same teams will be represented and we will see competitors coming in to town from both Dunedin and Christchurch as well as a fair amount of local talent. So who is behind this and why do they think it is a good idea to risk injury and heat exhaustion when they should be sitting on the favourite sun lounger with a cold one? Andre Klein and Andrew Miller have been running the Wanaka Futsal indoor football league for a couple of years and are keen to work on their tans “We have been hiding in the dark, wintery gym for some years now, Wanaka is so magic in the summer. We can’t think of a better way to enjoy the Wanaka lifestyle than lapping up the sunshine on the park with a ball and a few pals. And we might even score a goal or two as well!” jokes Mr Miller. Mr Klein points out that running a tournament, however small, boosts Wanaka’s profile as a place to be, so it is putting a little back into the community which they have enjoyed for years. “We love Wanaka and other people love coming to Wanaka. We love football and a few other people do to. There can’t be any better pitches than Pembroke Park. Combining the two was a no-brainer. I’m excited to see where this could go, Everyone has heard of the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, maybe the next big thing will be the Wanaka Soccer Sevens?!” gushes Mr Klein. Late entries are still being taken so if you and a couple of mates fancy yourself at the beautiful game get yourself entered. Due to the failing bodies of the event organisors Masters rules apply so don’t worry about getting taken out by an old boot boy with failing timing, sliding tackles are outlawed. No doubt this won’t diminish the spirit of the competition or the rivalry in the games which will be just like the February Wanaka weather – Hot!
