Wanna know why I take all religions with one eyebrow raised skeptically? Scientist estimate that the observable universe has a diameter of about 93 billion light years and a volume of 4 times 10 to the 83rd power liters. (Facebook doesnt do exponential notation.) There are hundreds of billions of galaxies and if you want see how many stars there are, write the number of 10 followed by 25 zeros. There are planets revolving around those stars, and and estimated 100 billion of them are Earth-like. (Theyre not too hot and not too cold and they have water and have conditions which may allow the formation of life and some percentage of them contain or did contain or will contain intelligent life.) And with all of that, Im asked to believe that God is keeping track on whether I might get a tattoo or eat or drink the wrong thing or wear clothes of two different fibers or have the wrong haircut or do anything that is forbidden in the Bible or the Koran or any other text that is characterized as sacred. (Like George Carlin once joked, how many Catholics are doing time in Purgatory for eating a roast beef sandwich on a Friday?) Imagine how simple the universe would be if instead of all of those thou shall nots, the message was just Be kind to one another and dont do bad stuff.
