Wanna work out your marketing chops? Pitch the same show 4 - TopicsExpress

Wanna work out your marketing chops? Pitch the same show 4 times to 4 different targets: the Press, the Artistic Director of the theater you want to do it at, the General Public, and your friends. All four pitches are similar, but the tone and approach should be different. For press releases, you want to tell the press what to expect if they come without overselling it. The advice I got was to tell them what theyll see, not how they should feel about it. Thats for them to decide. For pitching to the artistic director or the theater management, you want to be casual and sincere, and to convey your enthusiasm/goals authentically. For the general public, you can sell a little more overtly. Youre still telling them what to expect, but you can also promise a little more. For friends, personalize it, and tell them why the show is exciting to you. For instance, heres my attempt to pitch Austin Secrets. These arent complete pitches, obviously. I just wanted to capture the tone. ---- *** Promoting to The Press Inspired by projects such as PostSecret, StoryCorps, and Mortified, Austin Secrets takes the audience on a roller coaster ride of emotions through the human heart. This an improvised performance, but the secrets are real, submitted anonymously by the public via postcards. Silly secrets will result in comedic scenes, and serious secrets will generate moments of gut-wrenching tension. Austin Secrets is a show that is near and dear to my heart, says Artistic Director Roy Janik. It creates a unique mood of intimacy, catharsis, and empathy that I have never experienced in another show. *** Promoting to an Artistic Director Im really pumped about this idea. Weve been exploring dramatic work at The Hideout lately, but this show will force the issue in a what I think will be a fun way. The secrets will set the tone of the scenes, and well do everything in our power to honor them. If we do it right, the audience will feel like theyve been let into the hearts and souls of the performers and the anonymous people who shared their stories. At the very least, well be pushing at the boundaries of improv, and doubling down on commitment. And thats exciting to me. *** The General Public This show is about you. Your stories. Your fears. Your triumphs. Your failures. Your secrets. There is a movement afoot… a movement that celebrates the power of everyday lives, and which proclaims that the memories we hold within our hearts are the most powerful stories we can tell. That is where Austin Secrets takes its motivation. In every show we’ll use improvisation to explore secrets anonymously submitted by you and other Austinites. Serious secrets will be treated with proper respect, and more lighthearted secrets will be treated frivolously, so expect a mix of drama, comedy, and everything in between. *** Your Friends Weve been rehearsing for a show for the past two months, and the debut is this weekend! Its called Austin Secrets, and Im really excited for it. We take peoples real secrets and improvise scenes based off of them. The rehearsal process has been pretty intense, because depending on the secret, the scene can be super serious or super silly. Its been really pushing me as an artist in the best way possible. I hope you can come out. It runs every Saturday at 8pm in March and April, and you can get tickets at the Hideout website. Let me know when youre coming and well get drinks afterward. -----
