Want to know who was behind the push for a civics test? I wondered about the supposedly non-partisan Scottsdale-based Joe Foss Institute, so I just did a cursory check. Some of its leaders arent easily found online or affiliated with a particular political party, but of those who do, I betcha cant guess which party it favors...well, you probably can guess correctly, beginning with its founder, Joe Foss, a conservative Republican: On the Board of Directors, four identify themselves as Republican, five are likely Republican and eight dont have anything easily found that identifies themselves as being from either party. No one on the Board of Directors claims to be Democrat. On the advisory board, seven identify as Republicans, one is likely Republican, three identify as Democrats and four are unknown. The late Joe Foss – Flying ace, two terms as GOP U.S. Rep in S.D., became the state’s youngest governor. Active in Campus Crusade for Christ. In 1968: named chairman of Veterans for Nixon. Former NRA president. Longtime friends with Tom Brokaw. Defeated by McGovern for Congress. Dick Cheney, Charlton Heston and Ollie North eulogized him. Board of Directors Identified themselves as Republicans: Sandy Froman (Chairman): attorney, former NRA president, advocate for the appointment of judicial conservatives as federal judges, member of the Santa Barbara Tea Party and Culpepper Society, longtime member of the Federalist Society, an organization of conservative and libertarian attorneys Frank Riggs (CEO & President): former Republican candidate for Arizona Governor LTG William G. Boykin, (Ret.): US Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence under President George W. Bush and a conservative Christian political activist. Norman McClelland: founder of the Goldwater Institute Probably Republican: Jim Chamberlain (Vice Chairman): Says he’s non-partisan, but cites “patriots like Senators Rand Paul, Jeff Flake, Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Tim Scott, Representatives Justin Amash, David Schweikert, Thomas Massie” Linda Paulk: founder of Sky Ranch one of North America’s premiere Christian Camps, as well as a Recognized School Programs Provider, and Retreat/Conference Center. Sky Ranch exists to provide people with a positive, recreational, fun, and memorable experience, while being exposed to the truths of the Word of God.” Lucian Spataro: environmentalist, businessman, educator, and adventurer, no political view stated but uses a photo of him with former GOP Gov. Jane Dee Hull on his website Karrin Taylor: Executive Vice President at DMB Associates (real estate) in Scottsdale, daughter of conservative Republican Arizona Senate President Carl Kunasek, who regretted not being able to stop Mecham’s impeachment. Greg Wyman: educator, endorsed conservative Republican Kevin Thompson for Mesa City Council, Unknown: Donna “didi” Foss, Chairman Emeritus Capt. Bob Turpin USN (Ret.), Secretary Conrad A. Conrad, Treasurer John Christian H. Dean Hall Dave Kingston doesn’t seem to have a political agenda, Las Vegas-based businessman/philanthropist Stan McLaughlin Jr. Merle Shepard ------------------- Advisory Board Identified as Republican Senator and Mrs. Bill Armstrong: GOP former rep and senator from Colorado, now president of Colo Christian University, B of Dir for Campus Crusade for Christ Jim Click John Elway: aligned with GOP, “middle right” Vice President Danforth Quayle Senator Alan K. Simpson Lt. Col Oliver L. North, USMC (Ret.) Probably Republican: Don Shula: endorsed Gov. Charlie Crist in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat “Governor Crist’s conservative policies have kept our taxes low and allowed our businesses to thrive, and he has the character it takes to work first and foremost for his fellow Floridians.” Democrat Dan Boren: former Rep. from Oklahoma but his cousin is married to Paul Ryan, long ties to NRA Tom Brokaw Senator and Mrs. John Glenn Unknown: Barron Hilton General Robert C.
