Want to share advice that has stuck with me from a talk I heard years ago. Always remember these three words: Iqra, Qum, Qum. The first word Iqra from Surah Al- Alaq: ‘Recite in the name of your Lord who created’ اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ The second Qum from Surah Al - Mudaththir: ‘Arise and warn’ قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ The third Qum from Surah Al - Muzammil: ‘Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little’ قُمِ اللَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا These ayat are from amongst the earliest revelation – so from day one of the message Rasulullah (saw) was engaged in the following actions (simultaneously): a) Reading and hence studying and understanding the Deen b) Arising to warn – carrying the correct understanding of the Deen to the rest of mankind, seeking its establishment upon the earth, bringing with it the light of Islam c) Arising for prayer – specifically the night prayer (tahajjud) to maintain that bond with our Rabb (swt) and also to recharge our ‘batteries’ after the days’ work of learning, implementing and spreading the Deen! So important to ensure we do all three in sha Allah!
