Wanted some opinions on this. Went to a talk yesterday by a very talented, skilled and knowledgeable scientist (female). She works and was talking about an area I love and so naturally, I enthusiastically talked about this for a few mins after the talk with my (male) colleagues. I then made a joke that she must be good as she also had the same handbag as me, which was met with the usual eurgh girls are shallow and not listening to the science inspired remarks. I like to think girls can like handbags and be good at science. Is this naive? Should it make a difference? For more context- Im the only girl in a 7-8 person structural biology group. And these male colleagues have made similar remarks if for example the visiting speaker was a younger cooler guy wearing converse.
