Wanted to share an email I received today about the United States of Autism movie: Dear All: First, I apologize for asking for anything – it is difficult but this is a good cause. I know because high-functioning autism runs in my immediate family. Most people are clueless about being on the autism spectrum and asperger’s, the high-functioning end of the spectrum. Although 1 in 88 have autism, almost no one understands exactly what having autism means for the individual and for his/her parents, siblings, family and co-workers. The Autism Awareness Walk-A-Thon of Richland County is very active and has raised thousands of dollars for autistic kids. Many of our lives are touched by those either on the spectrum or are affected by someone who is. A relatively simple sacrifice of $12 and two hours may make a huge difference in your life or in your ability to understand and communicate with folks on the spectrum. There are some kids locally that will greatly benefit from viewing this film. It’s difficult to communicate with autistic persons unless the subject is of their choosing.
