Wanted to share this for those looking for something to coat the esophagus. When my Lab was initially diagnosed with ME in 2011, I pushed carafate down her for the first couple of years. We tried crushed pills in water, flavored suspensions, etc. She didnt like it and it was a pain for me having to give it 30 min before or hours after feeding/meds. Found this recipe for Slippery Elm soup last year and we havent looked back since! My Lab LOVES it and it is so much easier, cheaper and (in my opinion) better at coating/bandaging the esophagus than carafate. Recipe and more info from Dr. Yassons Holvet website: holvet.net/slippery_soup.html. There is also a copy in the files section of this group. I do the long brew method and cook 3 cups at a time. I boil 3 cups of water, stir in 3 heaping teaspoons of powdered Slippery Elm inner bark (bought on Amazon – $25 for a 16oz bag) then simmer for 10 minutes. It should be the consistency of snot (gross, I know). I store the mixture in the refrigerator and my 65# Lab goes through 3 cups every 3 days or so. I give her ¼ cup before feeding and ¼ cup after. I like to think it coats her esophagus before feeding so everything slides down easy. Then the dose after eating re-bandages her esophagus. I add 3 tablespoons of local honey to each batch and she gobbles it right up. It also provides extra water which many of our ME dogs need. I feed Annabelle twice a day so she gets 1 cup per day unless she has a bad bout of regurge and then I will give her an extra dose afterwards.
