War is a violent teacher ~ Thucydides The Americans have spent 10 years and $25billion training the Iraqi army. However, out of 200 battalions, only 3 are deemed battle-worthy in the war against Islamic State. In the words of one Western military adviser: For want of a better phrase, you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink. The Iraqi army needs the backing of the people of Iraq… They need something worth fighting for. At home, any teacher talking like that would be marked as a Marxist enemy of promise and edged out via capability procedures. Tellingly, the phrase You can lead a horse to water… is practically banned in education. But teaching is now training and trainers are accountable for the results of their students. So, should we sack good military advisers for training poor soldiers? (No, they were given an impossible job). Or should we listen to teachers when they talk about esprit de corps? Rape, murder, its just a shot away…
