Wikipedia: Territories have always been a part of the United States.[2] By Act of Congress, the term ‘United States,’ when used in a geographical sense, means “the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands of the United States.”[3] Since political union with the Northern Mariana Islands in 1986, they too are treated as a part of the U.S.[3] An Executive Order in 2007 includes American Samoa as U.S. “geographical extent” duly reflected in U.S. State Department documents.[4]
