Warning! Long Post Alert After reading a post tonight on What Not to Say to Autism parents, it really got me thinking about one particular thing people usually say when they find out your child has Autism, and thats Im Sorry. I completely understand where this is coming from, its looked on as bad news and everyone wants to sympathize and show they care, so usually it doesnt bother me. BUT I would love to clarify WHY it is something wed prefer you didnt say. I think people get so used to saying Im Sorry for everything, especially us Canadians. We are so polite after all. :) But we say this almost too much, if a child gets his tonsils removed youll say sorry, if a teenager breaks his arm playing hockey youll apologize. After all we dont like seeing kids hurt. However autistic kids arent hurt. Their not just going through something theyll simply wear a cast for to fix or have surgery for. Their living with a lifelong disorder, not a disease. Their simply different. They think differently, act differently, understand the World differently and relate to people differently but their not broken and they do not need fixing. As a Mom I dont want anyones sympathy for having two autistic kids. After all they are the light of my life and the reason I get up everyday. I am no different than any other Mom, Im not more special or stronger either AND I would not change my sweet special autistic boys for any other children in the World! They are wonderful and unique and fill my life with such joy everyday. So please dont feel sorry for us when you meet us. Because while we may appreciate a kind word and a little empathy like any other Mom when she is having a tough day, we are not sorry but blessed to be raising such special kids. Sincerely, An Autism Mommy
