Warning: Mack is on his soap box. Ellen and I watched this last night and were both moved by the challenges these kids face in their relationships with their parents. Not the topic here: the millions of young people who have strong orientation to the arts and drop out of school because they will get more support from fellow employees working in a coffee bar. (The most practical way to support the arts in America is to support a raise in the minimum wage.) What has made me sad since before graduating from high school is the fact that the only training in the arts for kids, where it exists at all, is a talent search for the next super star. What most excited me was stage craft. Nothing. Look at the long list of jobs in an exciting industry at the end of every film. Costume creation. Make-up. Lighting. I would have jumped at the chance to be part of the road crew for a traveling theater company. I got to have brief contact with a crew that was rebuilding sets so they could be transported as pre-fabs in trunks. Still think about the exciting challenge they faced. What is the minimum you need to suggest a living room? Rant to be continued.
