Warning. Rant and Spoliers So, I liked the film Frozen, but Im really tired of these power ballads that equate being strong with being emotionally shut off. What are we teaching our kids here? Let me break the film down. Two extremely wealthy sisters have fun together. One of them is different than other people and can cause people to get hurt just by being herself. The parent figures teach her to hide who she is from everyone and never learn to understand or deal with her emotions about who she is. Then they take the younger sister to have a neurological procedure so that she never has to understand her feelings on the subject either. The parents die leaving the two abandoned and neglected children to sit around doing nothing but escape into their own minds until they become teens. The youngest is so starved for interaction and emotional understanding that she becomes a victim to a sociopath. The two emotionally stunted girls end up forging a bond based on their shared abuse experiences. The younger meets a guy who is almost as socially stunted as her and they call it love. The girls grow into women who never really have to face positive emotional health because they are wealthy. Oh, and theres a magical snow man that helps them escape from reality. Hmmmm. How about, instead, we teach our kids what strength really is which is knowing yourself, being yourself, loving yourself and being kind and compassionate to others? How about we teach kids that there is nothing wrong with being different, but you still have to deal with consequences? How about we stop equating Letting go with shutting down? So the next time that catchy jingle comes into your head, lets change the concept of cutting yourself off emotionally until you become irrational to I am me. I am me. It is good to be me. Here I am being kind to you. Lets enjoy who we are today.
