Warning: Swimming in lakes & disused quarries Police across North Wales are warning of the dangers of swimming in lakes and at disused quarries. The warning comes after police have become aware of youths jumping from rocks and into the pool at Denbigh Quarry, to swim. “Although it can be extremely tempting in this weather to jump into the nearest pool or lake to cool down or to swim the water at disused quarries, particularly the one in Denbigh is very murky and the depths within the pool are extremely inconsistent,” said District Inspector Siobhan Edwards. “As well as the obvious danger of swimming at such unsupervised and remote places, jumping from the rocks can also put the individual in exceptional danger. “Swimming at disused quarries is a very dangerous practice and I’d appeal to all youngsters and anyone else to please stay away.” The quarry in Denbigh is also private property and anyone found swimming or on the rocks would be trespassing. With the warm weather set to stay with us for the near future, officers are also calling on the public to take care if they plan to swim in the many lakes and rivers across North Wales. Insp Edwards added: “We want everyone to enjoy themselves in this beautiful weather but to keep safe. The water can be extremely cold and the lakes can also have hidden hazards such as debris, weeds and reeds that you may not be able to see from the surface. The water can also be very deep and swimmers can easily find themselves out of their depths. Some rivers can seem extremely calm but have strong undercurrents." She added: “If you do plan to go swimming in such places please ensure that you are accompanied, think about the dangers beforehand. Don’t trespass, warnings are there for a reason. Think before you go into the water and tell people where you are going.”
