Warning: This post contains fond rememberance of kid-on-kid violence. Its funny that my cousin Elizabeth Avery contacted me on FB last night. I just told Dad this story a couple days ago: I was about 9 or 10, we were on the school bus, getting pretty close to our stop. Liz and I were sitting together, Jack Bussing was sitting alone two seats ahead of us. There two boys a couple years older than Jack sitting behind him. They were poking him in the back and talking trash to him. Liz became extemely upset, and was loudly telling them to leave her brother alone. The bus driver appeared to hear none of this. Finally, she smacked the biggest of the two in the back of the head. He turned around in his seat and reached for her. I punched him in the mouth. I was small for my age, but it doesnt take much to break lips against teeth. This boy flew into a rage and reached for both of us. He was stopped in mid-lunge by a powerful hand around his throat, as Jack pulled him backward across the seat back and began beating him in the head. Jack would take a lot of abuse, but he wouldnt stand for someone touching his sister. The bus driver finally took notice and broke it up. When we got off the bus, the driver had to stop the two boys from following. Good thing for them, because by this time Lonnie had taken an interest. Lonnie never fought our battles for us, but he wasnt about to miss out when there was plenty of violence to spread around.
