Warning: This post contains information that some may find disturbing regarding blood donor greyhounds. Our Jake became a SUPERHERO today! He donated blood at the Animal Emergency Center at Woolloongabba. At some vets, greyhounds are surrendered by their trainers to be drained of their blood before being euthanized. The blood is used for blood transfusions for animal patients that require them. Whilst we understand this practice saves lives, we think its awful that any dog would be drained of their blood before death. Here are CRQ, we use the AEC at Woolloongabba on a regular basis when our pets need after hours care. When I first heard of the practice of draining greyhounds of their blood, I immediately questioned whether this was a practice that happened at the vets we use. The answer was a straight out no! At the AEC at Woolloongabba, they have a fantastic blood donor program where big healthy dogs can donate blood which is used to save the lives of others. The procedure is done under sedation so it doesnt hurt and they get a whole lot of love and yummy treats! Jakes foster carer Kirsty is a vet student and she suggested Jake would be an ideal candidate for blood donation. He is so happy and sweet, very patient and good natured, and seeings we saved his life at the last minute we think he wouldnt mind saving a few others! Now, who wants to adopt a superhero?
