Warning, this is going to be a long drawn out status about the joys of car repairs! Continue reading at you own risk. I took our CR-V in for an alignment yesterday, no big deal right? It was pulling right so I took it in. I had also noticed a slight squeaky noise in the front driver side tire. So I had them check it out. I didnt expect anything too serious. The shop called me at about 1:00 yesterday to tell me that I needed a new ball joint. Not unexpected, since I heard the squeak. I told them to go ahead and fix it, then align my vehicle. They told me I wouldnt get my car until the next day (today), I understood. Today they called me to tell me that my car was finished at 3:30pm. They said they had an issue with a part they needed but would explain it to me when I came to pick it up. So, Im thinking they didnt have the part in house so they had to wait for it to arrive. WRONG!! It turns out that the mechanic had broken off the bolt that holds on the u-joint while taking it off to replace the ball joint. Which means they had to put on a new u-joint, at the cost of $112. Somehow it became my responsibility to pay for his screw up. Not so fast dude! Upon further explanation, the mechanic revealed that whoever owned our car before us had welded the nut to the u-joint, thus making it a little more difficult to remove. Now, he assumes that its my responsibility to pay for this broken part since it was welded before. HOWEVER!!! The weld was only a tack weld, meaning the person barely connected the bolt to the threads. In fact it was only welded to the very tip of it. A TINY amount of grinding, and the bolt would have come right off, leaving the threads intact (and the u-joint as well) But instead, this mechanic decided he would just break the thing off and get a new part, since it was easier for him. Never mind that it would cost me another $100 plus. So $455.43 later, I was finally out of the shop with my car........... and it still pulls to the right. Needless to say, this shop will NOT be getting any more of my business. Next time I will just let Shane and dad have a crack at it first. I only took it in to save them some time since both of them are so busy. After todays events both of them agreed they would find the time and save the $455!! Rant over...
