Warr Acres Police lost a great friend and true hero today. Steven George Knopp passed away today. He was a Marine Corp veteran from the Vietnam War and the recipient of two purple heart awards. He became a police officer for Warr Acres Police in 1975 rose through the ranks and retired in 1998. He had obtained the rank of Police Chief prior to his retirement. In 1980 he was shot during an armed robbery at Eckerds Drug Store at NW 39th and MacArthur. He survived the gunshot wound partially because the ink pen in his pocket deflected the bullet from his heart. Steve’s leadership and friendship impacted everyone that he came into to contact with. He will be in our hearts forever.
