Warrant Officer Herbert Anderson was commander of the armed patrol boat HMAS Lolita, guarding the entrance to Sydney Harbour at 10.20pm on 31 May, 1942, when it was called to investigate a suspicious object caught in an anti-submarine net. He saw that it was a Japanese submarine and quickly dropped two depth charges, which failed to explode. He was about to drop a third when the two-man Japanese crew, realising they had been discovered, committed suicide by exploding their submarine, showering the Lolita with wreckage and almost sinking it. Two more submarines came into the Harbour. Although 21 Australian sailors were killed, Although never given the recognition which was his due, Warrant Officer Andersons quick action saved many lives.
