Warrant Officer Merlin Longaphie will officially retire from the Forces and commence retirement leave on 08 October 2014 following nearly 30 years of outstanding service. He is currently employed as the Regular Force Operations WO with The Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada (RHFC), a Reserve Inf unit in the Cambridge-Kitchener area. WO Merlin Longaphie enrolled in the CAF 26 Nov 1984 in Charlottetown PEI and completed recruit training at CFB Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in April 1985, after which he was posted to The RCR Battle School at CFB Petawawa to conduct QL3 Infantry training. Upon completion of QL3 he was posted to 1 RCR, the Special Service Force, in London, ON. While serving with the 1st Bn from July 1985 to Nov 1987, he completed several QL4 courses, and was deployed twice as a member of AMF(L), once to northern Norway in 1986 and again to Denmark in 1987. Upon return from Denmark WO Longaphie was posted to 3RCR at Kapyong Barracks, CFB Winnipeg in Nov 1987, remaining there until moving with the 3rd Bn to Baden-Soellingen West Germany in July 1988. While serving with 3 RCR Recce Platoon he would complete the Infantry Section Commander Course (ISCC) before being posted back to Canada to 2 RCR in 1991. WO Longaphie was promoted to the rank of MCpl in 1991 and would deploy twice with the 2nd Bn to the former Yugoslavia (Bosnia). In 1997 he was posted to 2CMBG HQ at CFB Petawawa, serving consecutively as the Defense and Security section commander and HQ& Sigs Operations and Training NCO. WO Longaphie was posted back to 1 RCR in 1999 and upon posting was promoted to the rank of Sgt, he would remain with the 1st Bn until 2003 during which time he completed the Advance Reconnaissance Patrolman course and was deployed on OP Kinetic, Kosovo. In 2003 WO Longaphie was posted to LFCATC Meaford where he would be employed in various positions, including CQMS and Infantry Training Standards WO. WO Longaphie completed the Inf 6B in 2005 and was promoted to his current rank upon completion of the course. He was posted back to Petawawa in Nov 2007 and deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 as part of the OMLT with TF 3-08, 3 RCR. Upon return from Afghanistan in 2009 he was posted back to LFCATC Meaford as the Infantry Training Standards WO. In 2011 WO Longaphie was posted to the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada as the Operations WO. Upon retirement from the Regular Force, Warrant Officer Longaphie will commence a new career in the private sector but plans to continue his military service with a component transfer to the Reserves (RHFC).
