Warren Edward SCHRADER was the first Meteor pilot to destroy a Me 262 ! Let me explain you that... Warren Schrader of RNZAF first served in No. 1435 Squadron RAF and scored 2 confirmed victories and one shared in the MTO while flying a Spitfire IX (MA419). In March 1945, he was appointed CO of No. 486 Squadron RNZAF and with the formidable Hawker Tempest he scored 10 confirmed victories (including one shared). On 2 May 1945, he was appointed CO of No. 616 Squadron RAF, a unit equiped with the first Allied jet fighter, the Gloster Meteor. The folowing day, during his first mission with this new mount, Warren Schrader have hit a tree at take off. Flying on one engine he was able to land safely. The third mission was more succesful : he destroyed three aircrafts on the ground. The 4th, a ceased-fire between the Commonwealth Forces and the Axis Forces was established and RAF pilots were forbiden to fly over german held territories. In late May 1945, with the help of Friedrich SCHLUTER of 2./Nahaufklärungsgruppe 6 learn how to fly the jet Me 262. For his first flight, he choose to ferry the Me 262 from Fassberg to Lübeck. After a stressful take off, Warren Schrader enjoyed a good flight with his new aircraft. Over Lübeck he made low pass over the mess and sound of jet engines call all the RAF pilots outside. But at the moment of landing, Warren Schrader was not able to pull down the nose wheel. He subsequently landed on the nose and the engine started to burn. He quickly jumped out and was roundly congratulated by James Edgar Johnnie JOHNSON for the bloody marvelous show !. The aircraft was a Me 262 A-1a (W.Nr. 112372) which belonged before to 9./JG 7
