Warrens hold on against Rockets 10/25/2013 By Corey Greaves Defending league champions Warrens survived a late scare to defeat the Rockets three sets to two in the women’s Division of the Goddard Enterprises Limited Senior Volleyball League competition which continued on Wednesday at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex. Warrens held the advantage in the second and third set only to see it wiped away each time by the Rockets who clawed their way back to win the set. In the third set with Warren on match point 24-17, Rockets came charging back to win the set as they rattled off nine unanswered points to win 26-24. In the third set, the Rockets came from 21-15 down to win the set 25-22 as Warrens each time surrendered their advantage. In the fifth and deciding set, Warrens won the toss and was looking to get over the finish line. It is said a captain should lead from the front and that is what each respective captain did, Shari Matthews for the Rockets and Talia Layne for Warrens. Almost instinctively the setters from both teams were giving their captains the ball after the opening serve from both sides ended up in the net. However, while Layne was able to use her experience to score, the Warrens blockers were ready each time for Matthews who met them on every occasion. This allowed Warrens to open a 4-1 lead in a set which was only going to 15. Matthews finally found and opening as the blocks were late on the next play and she gave her team their first point from an attacking play, 4-2. But that was all the answers Rockets had before the teams changed sides, as the Warrens defence led by Rhe-Ann Niles at the blocks were not allowing anything to touch the floor. At the changeover Warrens led 8-2 and Rockets found themselves in a familiar hole once again. Yet, after leading by as much as eight points, Warrens started to leak points as they had done throughout the entire game. A few errors from Warrens and the combination of Anicia Wood and Matthews helped Rockets claw their way out of the deficit and to within three points, 13-10. Rockets kept on coming and even some good hustle play by Warrens was not rewarded as Matthews pounded the ball to the floor and moved Rockets to within one point of levelling the scores 14-13. However, after some impressive play from either side on the court, the game end in what many would have said an anticlimactic fashion as the Rockets saw their final serve go wide and the Warrens celebrations began. The final scores in the game Warrens won 25-19, 24-26, 22-25, 25-14, 15-13. In the other women’s game the Toners came from a set down to defeat the Club United 20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 26-24, while in the men’s game Chargers kept their undefeated streak alive when they defeated Cawmere 25-12, 25-22, 25-15, and Deacons defeated the Juniors 25-13, 20-25, 25-16, 25-12.
