Warwick Uni 4ths vs Etone 1sts Our last match this term was against bottom of the table Etone. We were all feeling confident for this match and looking to pick up good points so a 4-1 defeat came as something of a surprise. Etone seemed eager to get the match started so with little warm up, on went the first players. Dilup Mahipalamudali lost his match 3-0 despite some good squash. The first and third games were very close and Dilup looked to be on a comeback at the end having fallen asleep in the second game but he couldnt quite pull it off. On the next court Ben Griffith had his 100% record to defend. It was clear from the start that Ben was struggling though and making more mistakes than usual. He kept trying and more than once looked like he was back in the match. But it was over all too quickly, he lost 3-0. Ryan Wright went on at 3rd string looking to keep the tie alive. High intensity and some of his best squash this term put his opponent on the ropes. Even some controversial reffing didnt stop him taking the first game. The match was hard work mentally but after two more long games Ryan finished strongly taking 5 points in a row to win 3-0. With everything still to play for Rupert Larkin and Mason Phillpott took to the court. Rupert played a great match and some long rallies were clearly frustrating his opponent. After going 2-0 down Rupert claimed the 3rd game and the Etone player was visibly tiring in the 4th. However, some good tactical play saw him narrowly clinch it leaving Rupert on the end of a 3-1 defeat. It could so easily have gone the other way. Mason faced a player who was undefeated so far this season and his play backed up that record. The first 2 games went quickly as Mason struggled to find his feet and his length. He relaxed somewhat in the 3rd game and there were periods where he was on top. It wasnt enough today though as he lost 3-0. This defeat puts us at 2 wins from 8 matches. Not the first term we were hoping for but the league is closely fought and we are not so far away from a good position. Lessons have been learnt from the last few weeks. This experience and some solid training over the holidays will give us every chance of improving next term!
