Was at the Virginia Food and Beverage Expo in downtown Richmond - TopicsExpress

Was at the Virginia Food and Beverage Expo in downtown Richmond today -- which a bunch of entrepreneurs across Virginia pitch samples of their products to grocery stores and other food companies and vendors. The show is put on by VDACS. VDACS -- celebrating the 25th anniversary of Virginias Finest products, btw -- distributed awards for Best New Food, Best New Beverage, and Best New Overall. Va. Beach companies won both the Best New Food and Best New Overall. Ashburn Sauce Company won Best New Product with its new Crabby Mary bloody Mary mix -- that includes shrimp, crab, and lobster... and Willard Ashburn makes his own tomato juice from scratch. Best New Food was Molina Salsa -- Mild Flavor made by The Letner Company... who, btw, has occassionally employed Ashburn to makes some salsa for them. Kenny Letner says back in October, they started researching wanting to make salsa in the true Aztecian sense. They found a Franciscan friar by the name of Alonzo Di Molina in 1571 actually coined the word when he was translating the Aztec codex. They tried with this salsa to recreate those roots that were so prevalent as a staple in Aztec society. He says they used it on venison... and people are using it on pastas. Two of the top three awards by VB companies. Awesome. I did not have the chance to try the salsa... but I could drink that Crabby Mary mix straight up in glass fulls. Wow.
