Was chatting with a dude yesterday who got me talking about why Im an atheist. He asked me a very popular question in order to help me question my beliefs. Since you cant know with 100% certainty that a higher power doesnt exist, wouldnt it make sense to believe in God anyways just for that shot to get to heaven? Now, Ive heard good arguments regarding religion, but this is simply not one of them. This question is based on a false premise, that there are only two choices. A) Believe in God and you have a shot at going to heaven. B) Dont believe in God and lose your chance. However, I told him him his premise was missing something. First, it assumes that believing in God is the only way to get a chance to secure your spot heaven, but there are thousands of religions out there. You cant prove with certainty that the Christian God exists, and you cant prove that many of the other gods out there dont exist. However, being an Atheist gives me the same chance to go to heaven as believing in a religion. Why? Because theres a third choice: C) God will let you into heaven, but only if youre an atheist I mean, why not? Its a reasonable choice. Youre just as likely to go to heaven by being an atheist as being part of any religion out there using his argument. Then the dude told me I was naive and that I could only pick one of his two choices from his faulty premise. Life is suffering.
