Was honored to be chosen commencement speaker at prestigious Middlebury College over Mem Day weekend. A school that has long had my utmost respect, especially their century-old reputation as a hotbed of studies of foreign languages. A perfect Vermont day on an idyllic New England campus. Each and every faculty member was more impressive than the next. Professor Anne Knowles, Chair of Geography, has done extraordinary mapping of history, most recently her digital mapping of the entire Holocaust history. Several of us received honorary Doctorate Degrees. One example is charismatic African singer Angelique Kidjo, whose work on behalf of justice for African girls is powerful. To stand and face the 640 graduates of this 2014 class was a huge responsibility. I told them they wont believe it but they will blink and be my age. I advised them to go out and reach for the stars. They stood in a rousing ovation at the end and I saw hope in all their young faces. What a privileged experience. What a remarkable place.
