Was hoping to be able to tick one more thing off the pre-winter - TopicsExpress

Was hoping to be able to tick one more thing off the pre-winter checklist this afternoon and in doing so ran into what I thought was going to cost a bloody fortune! I was cleaning the chimney today and when the brush got to the bottom of the chimney part of the stove pipe that enters into the chimney fell off. You read that right, the stove pipe had rusted completely and fell off inside the chimney! I thought I was going to have to call in an expert and have them work their magic repair it and leave another large home repair bill... two in one week would have been hard to swallow ya know? Im not opposed to folks making an honest and decent living repairing things (especially here because my skills are limited at best and I cant do it all) but two in one week.... yikes! So I figured Id try to fix it myself first... with the help of youtube... nada! Nothing on there that was what I was looking for but there were tons of videos about masonry repair. So I thought about what I needed to do and sent a desperate text to a friend who works at a hardware store. NOT the same hardware store (or company) who scoffed at me for attempting to do my own home repairs. I took a few pictures of what I was dealing with and headed in to town, pictures, stove pipe piece and desperation in hand. I was able to show him and explain the situation to him and low and behold about $16.00 later I had everything I needed and headed home to fix the pipe! YAHOO! This is the kind of thing that you just dont find at a big box store. This is the kind of service that comes from developing a relationship with a local business who knows your name and often which feed you are there to buy because they know what critters you have and what you purchased last. They genuinely wants to help and to see you succeed. But its more than that, its a friendship of two families and swapping ideas, listening to stories and triumphs and sometimes tools. Its about community. My gratitude this evening is for community and friendship. For having friends you can call on in a panic who will help and guide you to success and who have your back. Thank you!
