Was it Truly a Minority Show of Protest? ---------------------------------------- Jadavpur University Faculty of Arts offers B.A. Honours in the following, according to its own website: Total courses found: 11 Bachelor of Arts in Bengali Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature Bachelor of Arts in Economics Bachelor of Arts in English Bachelor of Arts in History Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy Bachelor of Arts in Political Science Bachelor of Arts in Sanskrit Bachelor of Education(B Ed) Bachelor of Library & Information Science Bachelor of Physical Education Iam not sure about the intakes for the last three. The rest have a government dict5ated hike which now means we have to take 55 students. So these eight Departments alone have 440 students. If the other three have the same figure the total would be 605. Assume 10% did not sit for the finals or failed (a very high figure assumption given good students come to JU). Then about 540 passed. According to the Registrar JU, 222 of these students accepted their degrees. At the M.A. level, Total courses found: 17 Master of Arts in Bengali (Day) Master of Arts in Bengali (Eve) Master of Arts in Comparative Literature Master of Arts in Economics Master of Arts in Education Master of Arts in English Master of Arts in Film Studies Master of Arts in History Master of Arts in HIstory (Eve) Master of Arts in Philosophy (Day) Master of Arts in Philosophy (Evening) Master of Arts in Political Science with International Relations Master of Arts in Sanskrit (Day) Master of Arts in Sanskrit (Evening) Master of Arts in Sociology Master of Library & Information Science Master of Library & Information Science in Digital Library Of these some of the Evening courses have been discontinued. The older Departmernts have 70 seats for their Day courses. Specialised Departments requiring equipment etc might have lower figures. Moinak Biswas, and others could clarify. Still, the total figure cannot be much less than 850. Assume a drop and failure combined rate of 15% here, and you get around 725. According to the Registrar, 232 students took the degree. What this means is, while not all had decided to go up and openly confront the Governor, the majority had simply refused to fill up the forms and go inside. As a former HoD in two Departments, I have been present at four Convocations in an official capacity. As an ex-student I have seen two more convocations. I would challenge the Telegraph to produce data that shows this is the normal figure in proportional terms every year. Courtesy: Kunal Chattopadhyay
