Was nice to see Bobby Rowe at the Harbor House on Tuesday. Rowe played shortstop and, as he reminded teammate Bobby Hobe Leonard recently, batted third in the lineup for Science Hills 1947 state champion baseball team. Rowe, as Billy Joe Bowman and the late Ralph Carrier and John Mackley said, was a steadying presence on that state championship team. He slid home with the final run in a 7-6 win against Dobyns-Bennett. He said Billy Joe Bowman struck out something like the first 13 batters in a game against Kingsport. Billy Joe made it all the way to Triple-A and was a coach for years with the Houston Astros. ... But I most enjoyed hearing Bobby tell about the time my grandmother Evelyn Williams, who is now 90, called his home one day years ago and asked to speak to his mother and then sister. When told neither was home, he said she responded with, Well, I guess youll do. Two hours later she said, Well, Ive enjoyed talking to you, and Bobby said he replied, And Ive enjoyed listening to you.
