Was speaking in a Management Seminar for over 300 supervisors in the Manufacturing & Marine Industries with the topic given to be Supervision Vs Leadership. This is the summary of my keynote on Qualities to a Role of Supervisor & Leader. - 25 Jan 2014 Be an Advocate for the people who report to you. When we lead others, we stand up for the people we supervise. If someone has a compliant about one of your people, you handle the problem. You dont permit others bypass your responsibility and authority, Youre loyal to your employees, and you speak up for them when someone threatens their ability to accomplish their tasks. Be Fair without playing favourites or being a Pal by recognising the need to be the voice for those above us in the managerial chain. An effective leader cant be both manager and one of the gang. It is far better to strive for an even temper, fairness and a full understanding of what it is we are asking others to do. As supervisors, we cant create pride or a willingness among employees to do a good job. Those qualities have to come from the people who do the work. What you can create, however, is an environment where natural pride a worker feels for a job well done can flourish. Creating a great work environment where generates positive energy in the work place. Physics teaches us there are 2 kinds of energy; potential and kinetic. Potential energy is stored like a battery, and kinetic energy is in motion, like a freight train moving down the track. There is a third parameter to energy called inertia, a resistance to change in the kind of energy being expended. For example:- Potential Energy = New Ideas Im willing to try new things Kinetic Energy = Ideals in Motion Lets work together to make this happen Inertia Energy = Resistance to Change Ive seen it all Which kind of energy are you in your workplace?
