Was tagged by Sufia, so heres my list of 10 movies. These are not necessarily the ones I will mention every time I am asked to name my favorite ones, but I suspect some will feature almost every time. Anyway, these are names that come to my mind right away. 1. Land and Freedom - Based on Orwells Homage to Catalonia, this movie will always remain special to me, unless for some reason I turn into a total reactionary :p 2. Schindlers List - Yes I know what you are thinking, Israel is the rogue state now, but still, this remains one of my favorite movies, depicting the tyranny really well, though a larger than life depiction of Schindler didnt exactly suit me [those who have read the original book may shed light on this] 3. The Pianist - Dont know why, but I like to see movies of struggle .... and survival. This is one of them, and even when Adrien Brody is in that Alien [or Predators, whatever] movie, I cant get the image of him as the pianist, holding on to dear life, out of my mind. 4. Not One Less / Udaan - About a young girl who has been given the job of teaching in a very poor village, but she must ensure that she can retain all the students, who are constantly discouraged by their family members who dont want to send their children to the school. One of the students goes to the city seeking a job. Then starts the poor girls ordeal in trying to find her erstwhile student. Brought tears to my eyes, literally :) Udaan is the Hindi film, which probably didnt make too much name for itself, but I really liked, for its sensitive treatment of domestic abuse a boy had to face from his parent. 5. Twelve Angry Men - How various shades of class and social character gets revealed in due course of a jury trial., regarding a boy from a financially downtrodden background who is accused of stabbing someone to death. Simply loved it. 6. Norma Rae - Though the aggregate political punchline was outright reformist and problematic, still...trade union militancy and Sally Field in a film, what more could I ask for? :D 7. Chorus, Mrinal Sen / Battleship Potemkin - Loved the eclectic, radical use of technical styles, along with the obvious political overtones 8. Charulata - Okay, here, it is almost purely because of aesthetic reasons that I like this movie. Will ever associate that rapid camera zoom out when she puts down her binoculars with this movie and Ray. 9. Bicycle Thieves/Umberto D - It is a tie between two of my favorite neo realist movies 10. Salt of the Earth/Modern Times - Two movies, very different in most ways but with the common element being they were quite ahead of their times [in terms of cinema at least] politically I nominate, well, whoever wishes to give their list :p
