Was the Old Testament the product of originality or heavily influenced by Ancient Near Eastern thought and custom? Did the characters of the Old Testament speak, believe, and act in a totally separate and alien way to their predominant culture, or did their culture exert a powerful influence on how and what they believed? The cultures out of which ancient Israel came forth included Mesopotamian Ur (Abraham), Egypt (Moses), and Hittite Palestine. How did those cultures affect and influence their understanding of Yahweh? Was the OT a syncretic blending of ANE traditions, customs, and metaphors or was there something uniquely different about what Israel believed and did?
