Was up way too late watching Breeders videos and pondering again why Kim and Kelly look so different when they are supposedly identical twins. Then I remembered something I learned in a Coursera course on genetics: that females embryonic cells randomly choose which of their two X chromosomes they are going to use. It accounts for things like calico coats on cats. A quick google search later confirms that this also accounts for greater differences in female identical twins than male. Mystery solved!
