Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment. Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me. You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Psalm 51:2-7 We struggle with issues of shame in ourselves. We hide our shame behind a badge and a gun. We have participated in shaming others. Was this because we are not able to work through our own? God already knows what we have done. So why do we try to hide it from God? The easiest way to relieve shame is to make a full confession of what we have done. The shame comes from hiding our actions. Today, take some time and make full confession of the actions that you hide. Name them, specifically and out loud to God. Ask for forgiveness and to have your shame removed. You may find that God washes you, relieves you of your shame, and makes you clean. God, Judge of all humankind, you look upon us and see sinners, deserving of your punishment. We confess the sins that are already known to you. We no longer want to walk with shame in our hearts. We ask you to cleanse us, wash us, forgive us, and make us well. Amen.
