Washington University, Department of Music presents: Friday November 14, 2014 1:00 p.m. MCB - Music Classroom Building Room 102 Jazz Theory I class SEMINAR JAZZ VOICE ARRANGING Jay Oliver William Lenihan The Department of Music at Washington University is conducting a special seminar with well-known music industry record producer, JAY OLIVER on Jazz Voice Arranging and A Cappella. This public community are specially invited to attend with students of the university. Mr. Oliver is a producer in Los Angeles and has worked with numerous well-known singers/recording artists. Together, William Lenihan and Mr. Oliver have worked with, recorded or toured with a virtual whos who in the music business - in pop music, musical theatre and jazz and film - having arranged and produced for voice and instrumental ensembles. They will co-present this seminar giving insights and techniques into the art of voice arranging and recording. This seminar will focus on jazz harmony and arranging, score analysis, listening and voicing techniques, voice-leading and harmonic language. A special emphasis will be on the work of the great SINGERS UNLIMITED group, perhaps the most innovative and advanced of all jazz A Cappella groups. Gene Puerling, Len Dresslar, Bonnie Herman, Don Shelton were the members of the Singers Unlimited. We will briefly discuss the history of A Cappella in jazz from the Barbershop Quartet tradition to The Four Freshman, The Hi-Lo-s, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Manhattan Transfer and Take Six. Please invite any singers, A Cappella students you may know and any other interested people.
