Washington Workforce Development News Workforce Training & Education Coordinating Board July 17, 2014 WORKFORCE INNOVATION AND OPPORTUNITY ACT GOES TO PRESIDENT FOR SIGNATURE An historic bipartisan bill that reauthorizes and amends the Workforce Investment Act has passed both the House and Senate and heads to President Obama for signature. U.S. Sen. Patty Murray played a key role in moving this bill forward. The new legislation forges a stronger connection between employers and education providers and puts a stronger emphasis on serving out-of-school youth and incumbent workers, among other features. More at: wtb.wa.gov/Policy_Fed_WIA.asp AEROSPACE SURVEY ASKS FOR FEEDBACK ON EXPANDING SUPPLY OF SKILLED WORKERS The Workforce Board and several partners, including the Aerospace Futures Alliance, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges and the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance, have launched a 2014 Aerospace Skills Survey. The survey, now in its third year, invites input from aerospace and advanced manufacturing employers on hiring trends, skill gaps, demand for selected occupations, and education and training needs. Take the survey and read previous survey results at: wtb.wa.gov/aerospace.asp GOVERNORS COMMITTEE SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR EMPLOYERS WHO HIRE THOSE WITH DISABILITIES The Washington state Governors Committee on Disability Issues and Employment is seeking award nominations for employers and individuals who make extra efforts to recruit, hire, promote and retain employees with disabilities. Governors Employer Awards will be presented to up to 10 employers. Employers may nominate themselves and others. The Governors Trophy honors one individual with a disability who has empowered people with disabilities to succeed in the community and workforce. Nominations are due by Aug. 30. More info, contact Elaine Stefanowicz at 253-312-5065 or estefano@aol MAKE IT IN WASHINGTON POSTER MAKES IT TO WASHINGTON A poster that highlights a new project aimed at advancing the skills of rural manufacturing workers was selected to hang at the U.S. Economic Development Authority in Washington, D.C. The Workforce Board is administering a portion of a $2.7 million U.S. Department of Labor grant that pays for the Make it in Washington project. The project targets manufacturing workers in Washingtons rural, economically challenged counties, who receive online training, technical certification and college-level classes through Highline and Shoreline Colleges and Washington State Universitys Global Initiative Program. Agency staff designed the poster.
