Washingtons 11-year War on Terror continues and expands, with lots more boots on the ground for 2015 United States to Send 1,300 More Troops to Iraq Cost of airstrikes in Iraq and Syria tops $1 billion 20-12-2014: Rear Admiral John Kirby, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, has revealed that the US will send a further 1,300 troops will be sent to Iraq where they will provide counterintelligence, logistical support and communications alongside a longer term plan to retrain the Iraqi military. Kirby said that the initial length of the mission would be 9 months, although the training will take at least three years. Lieutenant General James Terry, the commander of the Combined Joint Task Force, Operation Inherent Resolve, said that although the Iraqi military is improving, large-scale operations such as the proposed offensive on Mosul, remain several months away.
